Richard Giragosian has said that Russia is “making mistakes” in ties with Armenia, as it does not respect Armenia as a reliable partner. He said that during his visit to Armenia, Russian President Vladimir Putin would visit Armenia after the 2013 presidential election and raise the price of Russian gas supplied to Armenia. Considering Armenia’s ties with the EU, Russia, and the USA, Giragosian said that Armenia should be neither pro-Russian nor pro-American, but pro-Armenian.

With the recent passing of the fifth anniversary of the Georgia-Russia war, there is growing concern over the deteriorating security situation in the South Caucasus, as tension has been mounting. Unlike the August 2008 war between Georgia and Russia, however, the escalating risk of renewed hostilities between Azerbaijan and Armenia over Karabakh ahas been obvious for sometime. And with no excuse for ignoring these distressing signs of a danger of war, the international community must adopt a more assertive campaign to pressure all sides to “climb down” and de-escalate tension. At the same time, there are specific steps by the parties to the conflict themselves that can be taken to both cease and desist from what now seems to be a new cycle of conflict.

ARMENIA EMBRACES SYRIANS, WARILY

More than six thousand Christian Armenians from Syria have poured into Armenia in recent months, escaping the civil war back home. WSJ's Joe Parkinson reports from Yerevan.

“First of all, we should prevent oligarchs from entering parliament and form such a political system that will be independent of individuals”, sad Richard Giragosian at the press conference. he noted that oligarchs hinder economic development of the country.
